Ramadan isn't just a fleeting page in the book of time, nor is it a temporary season for tears and devotion followed by apathy. Rather, it is the "Masterclass of the Year," a grand field for character building, and a laboratory for sincere worship. In it, hearts are forged, souls are re-engineered, and habits are built to last a lifetime.
Ultimate Goal
The core objective of fasting is to reach the station of "Taqwa" (God-consciousness)—a continuous state of being that does not expire when the month ends.
* From the Verse: Allah says: "O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous (attain Taqwa)" [Al-Baqarah: 183].
* From the Scholars: Imam Ibn Kathir states: "Fasting purifies the body and narrows the paths of Shaytan; thus, it is a primary cause for Taqwa, as it humbles the soul and breaks worldly desires" (1).
Inner Shift
After spending days and nights in Ramadan, you have tasted the sweetness of proximity to the Creator. You've moved from one act of worship to another; a prayer with presence, a heart-softening supplication, and a soul-reviving remembrance. Something inside you has changed. You realized the path to God is closer than you thought.
* From the Prophet: He (PBUH) said: "Whoever possesses three qualities will taste the sweetness of faith..." [Agreed upon] (2).
* From the Scholars: Al-Hafiz Ibn Rajab said: "Only those who find the sweetness of faith in their hearts can truly inhale the scent of Paradise in this world" (3).
Acceptance Test
The question we must ask now is: How will you be after Ramadan? Consistency in good deeds after the month is the ultimate proof that your efforts were accepted.
* From the Scholars: Bishr Al-Hafi was asked about people who worship intensely in Ramadan but stop afterward. He replied: "What miserable people they are, not knowing Allah except in Ramadan! The truly righteous person is the one who strives throughout the entire year" (4).
* From the Scholars: Al-Hasan Al-Basri said: "Allah has not set a finish line for a believer's work except for death," then he recited: "And worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty (death)" (5).
Willpower Training
Ramadan is an intensive course in self-purification and discipline. If a person leaves the month better than they entered, they have graduated with a higher degree of faith.
* From the Prophet: He (PBUH) said: "Fasting is a shield" [Agreed upon] (6), meaning a protection for the individual in both their religion and worldly life.
* From the Scholars: Ibn al-Qayyim says: "Fasting has a remarkable effect on preserving the external limbs and internal strength, protecting them from the pollutants that corrupt the soul" (7).
Staying Power
Do not settle for being a "seasonal worshipper." Be a servant of the Lord at all times. Hold on to what you can, even if it's a little; for consistency is what God loves most.
* From the Prophet: Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Prophet (PBUH) said: "The most beloved deeds to Allah are those done consistently, even if they are few" [Agreed upon] (8).
* From the Scholars: The practice of the household of Muhammad (PBUH) was "Dima," meaning constant and steady like a gentle, continuous rain (9).
